The Ideal Bedroom
Today's bedrooms are more than just a place to sleep and rest. They are all-hour retreats, where you can watch TV, set up a home office to conduct business or spend hours chatting with friends

Prior to purchasing bedroom furniture for your home, it's best to determine the size of bed you are going to need, your storage requirements and the amount of space any additional items will require.

Nearly a third of your time is spent asleep and the right bed for a room is extremely important. Beds take up a major portion of a room. Once you decide the size of bed you will need and where it will best fit, the placement of additional pieces falls neatly into place.

Generally, you should select a mattress that is at least 3 inches longer than the tallest person using the bed. Twin Size mattresses are 39" wide and 75" long. Full Size mattresses are 54" wide and 80" long. Queen Size mattresses are 60" wide and 80" long. King Size mattresses are 72" wide and 80" long

After you select the correct size of bed for a room, you next need to determine your storage needs, as well as accommodations for other items you may want to place in the room.

The size of a room dictates how many items you may place in it. It is best to allow at least 16" of free space between the bed and other bedroom pieces to avoid an overcrowded, cluttered feeling.

Once you select the essential items: a headboard, dresser, mirror, armoire and nightstands, you can then decide if space allows for a chair, recliner or chaise; an entertainment unit for your TV & stereo and a work center for your computer. Your next step is selecting the correct lighting and accents for your room. You may want to place lamps beside the bed, at your work desk and on your dresser. Wall decor and other accents complete a room and give it your own unique personal touch. Select accents that complement a setting and do not overpower a room. Above all, your bedroom should reflect the comforts you find inviting and there is no end to the pampering amenities you can have.
